Known by many locals as one of the warmest and cozy restaurants in New Plymouth, Mike’s has evolved over the decades while staying true to its community-focused roots.
From Craft Brewery to Modern Bistro
Originally founded by Mike Johnson in 1989 as a craft brewery in Urenui, the business was taken over by the Trigg family in 2007. The family introduced the now-famous seafood chowder alongside a range of award-winning craft beers that helped shape Mike’s loyal following.
In 2018, Mike’s relocated to central New Plymouth before moving again in 2024 to its current intimate location on Devon Street East. While the venue has evolved into a more modern and refined dining space, longtime guests will still recognise the quirky personality and welcoming atmosphere that made Mike’s a local favourite.

As a dedicated gluten-free food restaurant, we are working toward official certification with Coeliac New Zealand, helping provide extra confidence for coeliac and gluten-sensitive diners.

30's Club, Group Dining & Live Music
Beyond intimate dining, Mike’s also offers group dining and venue hire for birthdays, work functions, and social events in the New Plymouth CBD.
Our popular 30s Club promotion offers 30% off meals for dining members booking between 5 pm and 5:30pm, with online bookings, creating a relaxed and affordable early-dining experience throughout the week, and there’s a kids menu. (some 30’s Club Ts & Cs apply)
As the evening progresses, Mike’s transforms into a lively local hub with open mic nights and live local music after 8 pm on Thursday and Fridays, and 9pm on Saturdays. These community-focused events bring energy to the venue while still preserving the relaxed dinner atmosphere earlier in the evening.
